Ada Prowse dealt the last hand of the season on an upturned crate behind the Pearl wagon, the fairground lamps guttering in the wind off the Wash. Across the crate sat Tom Hewitt, who had already lost his wages, his mother's carriage clock and most of his temper. He tapped the boards twice, which was how he asked for another card, and she gave him one.

Her father had cut that deck himself, back when the fair still ran through three counties. Every red-backed card carried a heart on its face, and a heart, he used to say, is a fool's fortune until someone shows it three black diamonds. Ada had stitched three diamonds into the lining of her coat, one for each dealer who had ever tried to cheat her and failed. She had never once needed them. Tonight she felt the stiff cloth against her wrist and thought about the clock.
She turned her hand over slowly. Tom's face went the colour of cold porridge when the queens came up against his jack. "That's yours," she said, and pushed the clock across the boards with two fingers, the way her father used to push a winning stake back to a player. Tom stared at it. He did not ask why. Men like Tom never asked why when the answer might spoil their luck.
The brass bell on the Pearl rang for the last lamp. Ada folded the deck, tucked the diamonds deeper into her coat and walked back through the stalls, where the carousel horses had stopped mid-gallop and the painted hearts on their saddles were already flaking. Behind her, under Tom's arm as he limped towards the car park, the clock kept ticking, slow and stubborn, as if it had never been lost at all.
