Down by the old fish market, back when the stalls were still wood and the gutters ran like rivers, there was a rope-seller called Edith Marr. She sold tarred hemp by the fathom to anyone with coin, except one man. Tomas Hale came every Thursday with a ledger and a pencil behind his ear, and he never bought a fathom. He only ever asked for the loose end off the spool.
Edith had a rule: you don't cut a length without good reason. So for three winters they passed one cord back and forth across her counter. He'd tie a scrap of paper into the loop with a word on it, and she'd tie one back. Most of the words were ordinary. Rain. Tuesday. Your kettle's boiling. Then one Thursday there was only a single word, written small: you. She didn't answer that week, and he didn't come the next.
In spring she found him down at the harbour, mending nets with his knuckles split, and she said the word back to him. He said his own word, and they stood there with the cord slack between them, and neither would cut it. So she knotted the ends together into a loop that lay flat as a figure eight, and tied a small heart knot where the two strands crossed, so the loop would have somewhere to hold on.
The cord still hangs on her stall, rain beading along it, and the loop goes round without a beginning you can find. Look at the heart if you like. It's the only place on the whole thing where it stops, and nobody's ever been able to undo it.
