Infinity symbol with script words "on high"
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A single continuous black line forms an infinity symbol, with the cursive words on high written through the right-hand loop. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the design is shown in black on a pale grey-white background. The composition is centred and horizontal, with the design filling most of the frame.

Sit closer, the fire's given up and the wind has come round to the north again. You want the short of it or the long? The long, then, because the sea never gave anyone the short.

Eleven months out from Bristol on the Marigold Ann, a barque with more rope than sense, the cook's boy Tobias Pell was sent aloft at the change of the watch. Lookout, they called it. Nobody told him that from the top of the mainmast the sea doesn't end. It curls round the edge of the sky and comes back to where it started, a loop you could draw with one stroke of a pencil and never lift it off the paper.
He called down every hour that first week, "Sail ho", and then "Nothing, Mister Heald", until the mate threatened to put him in the galley for good. But on the ninth night the sky went green at the rim and Tobias shouted something else. Not sail, not land. He just shouted "on high", the way a child shouts at a kite, and the whole watch looked up. There were two lights low on the water, one chasing the other round the horizon, never catching and never letting go.
They sailed that loop until dawn, and the captain wrote it in the log as a squall. Tobias never corrected him. When they docked at Valparaíso he went ashore with a needle and a pot of ink bought off a Chilean rigger, and he asked for two words to be written where the line crosses itself, low and slanting, the way a man signs his name when he means it.
