Infinity symbol with three birds on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A thin black outline of an infinity symbol sits on the inner wrist, with three small solid black bird silhouettes flying along its loops. The outline is fine and even, and the birds are filled in solid black. Only black ink is visible against pale skin, with a dark, out of focus background behind the hand.

Mind the step, the boards went rotten past the second row, and don't lean on the rope, it has more opinions than the ringmaster ever did. Sit there, where the lamp still throws a decent light. You want the birds, don't you? Everybody wants the birds when the tent is this empty.

The Marrowby Brothers' Travelling Wonder once filled three counties and a fair bit of sea air. Its finale was the Loop, a length of wire bent into a figure of eight and strung high between two poles. Tomas Veil walked it blindfold while three doves wheeled through the rigging above him, always in the same order, always at the same speed. Each bird had a name taken from a town the show had left behind. Harrow was the dark one. Penmaen was the one that sang, badly. Little Dunmore flew last and was never once caught in the net.
The winter the takings stopped, the wire went slack in the damp and Tomas refused to let anyone else tune it. He sold the elephant, the calliope and the good boots, but he kept the birds in a basket under his bunk and fed them from his own plate. In March he climbed the Loop for the last time with nobody watching but me, and at the crossing point, where the two rings meet and you can't tell which way you are going, he simply stepped off into the middle. The doves went round three times more, then came down one by one onto his shoulders.
So if you're wondering where the story ends, it doesn't, that's the trick of a figure of eight. Listen. Hear that flutter in the rafters? That's Dunmore, still looking for the way out. Mind the step on your way home.
