Infinity symbol with sisters script
Fine line · Black and grey · Photo
A black fine line infinity symbol is tattooed on skin, with the word sisters written in cursive script running through the lower loop. The linework is thin and uniform, with some dotted and broken strokes along the curves. The image is a close crop in warm skin tones with no colour ink.

The river was brown and quick after three days of rain. We were late for Sonning, and the mooring fee sat unpaid in the tin under the bunk, next to Dad's old tide chart with the route inked on it in biro.

He had drawn the route himself: the river out and the cut back, one long figure that crossed over itself in the middle. Put your finger on it and you could go round for ever, he used to say, so long as nobody asked where you were headed. Mags said that was the most Dad thing he ever said, and then she sat in the galley for an hour over a tin of peaches, and I pretended not to hear her.
At the lock the paddles groaned and the water came up round us in green heaves. I stood on the cill with the windlass, watching the gates swing, and Mags shouted something I couldn't catch over the roar. When the boat rose level with the top, she was grinning, flour on her cheek from the bread she'd baked at dawn, and she held up the chart. Beside the lower loop she'd written, in her round capitals, SISTERS. Under it, smaller, she'd added: not yet.
