Infinity symbol with script letters
Fine line · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows an infinity symbol drawn in thin, even linework, with a few cursive letters sitting within the right-hand loop. The ink appears faded and lighter than the surrounding skin, and the letters are not fully clear. The image is a tight, square crop centred on the tattoo with plain, even lighting.

Mrs Pruett keeps the spare key on a loop of tarred string, and by the third week of October she has stopped asking you to hand it back at breakfast. You sit at the end of the long table at Marram House, where the gas fire ticks and the windows fog with the sea, and you watch the rain write over the harbour wall in long, unhurried strokes.

The room upstairs is the one with the brass bed that rocks when the ferry horn sounds. Somebody pencilled two names on the inside of the wardrobe door decades ago, one above the other, and then a third line crossed them out like a tide-mark. Nobody in the house will say who. Mrs Pruett only says the damp got into the paper and the names went soft, the way a letter does when it has been read too often on the pier.
On the last Thursday, the post brings a postcard with no stamp, just a hand-drawn figure of eight and a smudged word inside the second loop. You turn it over under the lamp. It could be a name, or only the ghost of one, the ink worn thin by salt air and years in a coat pocket. You prop it on the mantelpiece beside the tide tables, where the next lodger will find it, and you go down to the front to see whether the sea has finished coming in.
