Infinity symbol with hibiscus and Ohana script

Lettering · Back · Mixed · Photo

A close photograph of a tattoo on skin showing a black infinity symbol with the word Ohana written in flowing script through its right loop. A pink hibiscus flower with dark outlines and soft shading sits on the left loop of the infinity symbol. The black linework is bold and even against the light skin, and the composition is centred on the tattoo.

The tide was already dragging at the reef when my brother knotted the last cord of the net. He tied it the way our grandmother taught us, looping the line back over itself so the end ran beneath the start and came up where it began. "A lazy knot," I said. "It just goes round and round." Keola only grinned and tucked a hibiscus behind my ear, a red one from the wall of the salt shed in Koahiwi, the village at the far end of the kingdom of Mahinui, where nothing has been written down for longer than anyone can remember.

Our father had gone out past the reef at dawn with the other boats, and the wind turned while we were still on the sand. We waited with the net between us and counted the sails coming home the way children count stars. Four came back. Then a fifth, and a sixth, riding low in the water, with Uncle Makoa at the tiller shouting for rope.

We hauled the line in hand over hand. Keola's palms bled and I did not let go. When the hull grated onto the shingle, our father stepped out soaked and shaking and looked at the two of us holding the same cord, the knot between us still whole. He said nothing. He only took the far end from my hands and held on.

Keola keeps the hibiscus pressed flat in his prayer book now. I keep the cord, still knotted in its loop, hung by the door where the evening lamp can reach it.
