A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lighthouse keeper's daughter at Sallow Ness kept a jar of feathers on the windowsill, one for every gull that had fallen against the glass in the storms. When the old keeper died, she carried the jar down to the slipway and found that half of the feathers had gone grey with damp and would not lift in the wind. She sat on the wet stone until the tide turned.

A fisherman's wife called up to her from the boats. Her son had gone out in the spring blow and had not come back, and she wanted to know whether the sea took everything or only some of it. The girl did not know. She said the birds at the Ness did not go out past the rocks without coming back to the same ledge, and that was the only rule she had ever been sure of.

So they went up the cliff path together that evening and sat under the lamp while the beam went round and round over the water. A pair of swallows came in low over the wall, one chasing the other, looping out past the rocks and back again, never once leaving the bay. The fisherman's wife watched them until the light was almost dark.

In the morning the girl tipped the grey feathers over the edge and kept the dry ones. She began to tie a ribbon to the jar, and to each year after that she added one new feather, and when people asked her why she never let the jar fill, she said the sea was still making up its mind.
