Interlaced sea turtle tattoo
Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a sea turtle built from interlaced looping lines, with a looped head at the top and four flippers spread out around an oval body. The linework is dark with grey shading along the edges, giving the lines some depth. Small areas of red and green fill two of the flippers, and the rest of the design is black and grey against plain skin.

The pump quit on the Tuesday, and by Thursday the water in the engine shaft stood higher than anybody had said it would. Mam kept the kettle on the range as if the kettle could help. I sat on the step with Nan's piece of tarred twine across my knees, working the loops the way she had shown me, over and under, over and under, never letting the two ends meet until the pattern had closed by itself.

Nan's turtle was the only thing she ever drew with a knot instead of a pencil. She said green turtles swim thousands of miles and still find the one beach they were hatched on, and that a man working underground needed a picture of something that could find its own way home. She had sketched the shape on a slate for me: a head looped at the top, four flippers spread wide, the body woven through itself so you could never say where it began. "Keep it tight," she said, "or it comes undone in the wet."
On Friday I walked down to Porth Mear with the twine in my pocket and the cliffs black behind me. The tide had dropped, leaving a strip of wet sand where someone had scratched a turtle with a stick. I added the flippers in wool from Mam's basket, red for Dad, who was still below, and green for Tom, who had gone down on the Tuesday shift. The wool was damp and the colours bled a little into the sand.
When the whistle sounded from the engine house, I stood up and ran. Tom came up the path at dusk, grey to the eyebrows and grinning like a fool. I didn't ask how. I just pulled the twine tight at the last loop, so the ends couldn't find their way out.
