Isaiah 40:31 script and feather on a shoulder
Lettering · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows the words Isaiah and 40:31 in a flowing script above a shaded feather. The feather is drawn with fine hatched linework and soft grey shading along its vane. The ink is dark grey, and the photo is taken close up with the skin filling most of the frame.

The tyre had been humming for an hour before Ruth Ackland admitted it, and by then the water bottle was empty and the sun had dropped behind the ridge the way it did when it meant business. She pulled the Bedford onto the gravel shoulder of the Sallow Flats road and sat with both hands on the wheel, listening to the engine tick as it cooled. Nothing moved out there except the heat shimmer and a fence wire humming in the wind.

She got out and found the jack under the folded tarpaulin where her father always kept it, and beneath the tarpaulin, pressed flat between two sheets of oilcloth, a single grey feather. It was long and barred, soft at the base, and it had clearly been there for years. He had kept feathers from every bird that ever died on that road, sorting them into a biscuit tin with dates scratched on the lid. She remembered him holding one up to the window once and saying a hawk gets its height from the wind, not from running itself into the ground.
She jacked the wheel, cursed the wheel nut, and worked until her palms were grey with grease and the light had gone the colour of weak tea. Somewhere along the fence a lone bird called and then went quiet. When she finally tightened the last nut, she stood up slowly, wiped her hands on her trousers and looked at the feather lifting in the breeze against her wrist.
She drove on through the dark with the window down and the feather laid on the dashboard, where it lifted now and then as if it had somewhere else to be.
