Script word "faith" on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A flowing black cursive script spells the word faith across the inner forearm, with long looping strokes on the F and h. The tattoo is solid black ink with no shading, and the photograph is taken close up against a blurred background of dark hair and a white top. The composition centres the forearm diagonally across the frame.

The ewes started lambing three weeks early, which Dad would have called a sin if he were still here to call anything. I was up at four with a torch clamped in my teeth, dragging a slick lamb across the straw while the wind pushed snow under the barn door in long curled ribbons. Tom was no use. He stood by the gate holding his phone up to the sky, as if the signal might come back if he asked nicely.

Gran's feed book lived on the shelf above the kettle. Her handwriting ran across every page in faded ink, tight leaning figures for bales and bran and the price of ewe nuts, and then, at the back, the loops. She had practised a single word in the margins over and over, the way some people doodle. Faith. The F swept down like a shepherd's crook and the h curled back on itself like a ewe turning to check on her lamb.
Tom wanted the land sold by spring. He had a man from Shrewsbury coming with a clipboard and a bright red car. I told him I'd think about it, which was true, though not in the way he meant. I sat by the stove with the book on my knees and read those margins until the kettle boiled dry and I had to fill it again.
The second lamb came out breathing on its own, a black-faced twin with one ear folded flat. I wrote the date beside Gran's last entry, and then under it, small, in my own careless hand, the same word. The stove ticked. Outside the snow kept falling on the gate, and for once I didn't mind that it was still falling.
