The sign-writer's brush had dried out twice before Mr Nowak's shop fascia was finished, and I was on my knees on the pavement outside the closed chippy, rubbing gold leaf off my wrist with turpentine, when the rain started. Bradford at two in the morning smells of wet cardboard and the bakery on Thornton Road. I had one word left to letter and no idea how to make it look like it meant something.

"Just the name," Mr Nowak had said on Tuesday, handing me the stencil. But the card in his hand said MIŁOŚĆ in his daughter's round capitals, and the shop was called Miłość Bridal Alterations, and nobody had told the paint that. I had learned the word from my mother, who said it as a warning and a blessing in the same breath, usually while stirring soup.

So I drew it fine, a long hairline tail under the letters, and at the end a small open heart that I had no business putting there. Mr Nowak's daughter came out at half three in her dressing gown, looked up at the window, and cried, which I had not expected, and then told me the heart was too small.

I went back the next night and made it bigger. Some words are only ever read in the dark, by people walking home, and the paint dries before anyone asks who held the brush.
