Pencil and coloured pencil drawing of Jack Skellington and Oogie Boogie with dice and a banner reading Jack VS Oogie Boogie, designed as a tattoo flash.

Jack vs Oogie Boogie banner design

Mixed · Flash

The drawing shows Jack Skellington in a pinstriped suit with one hand raised to his chin, standing in front of Oogie Boogie, a green sack-like figure with a grinning mouth. Two pink dice float above Oogie's shoulder, and a pale ribbon banner along the bottom reads Jack VS Oogie Boogie. The linework is pencil with soft grey shading on Jack and green colour pencil on Oogie, set on a plain white background.

The dice were still spinning on the felt when Jack Skellington tapped his jaw with two fingers and studied the wager chalked above the bar of the Crooked Lantern. Nobody in that cellar had ever seen him sit still for long, so the room fell silent the moment he did. Across the table Oogie Boogie shifted his lumpy bulk, and the pink dice he had conjured hung in the smoke above his shoulder as though they had been told to wait.

"Your stake," said Oogie, and his grin opened wider than any grin should. "The whole of Hollow Lane against one winter afternoon." Jack laughed, a dry rattle like a box of kindling. He had lost lantern oil to this creature before, and the lane still had not forgiven him. Tonight he set a single black button on the felt, the one from his good coat, and Oogie's eyes narrowed to two wet coals.

"A button?"

"It counts every year it has been sewn on," Jack said, "and I have worn it a long time."

Oogie rolled first and came up with double sixes. The cellar groaned. Jack picked up his own dice, which were carved from a bone that remembered frost, and let them tumble without looking. When they stopped, nobody could say how many pips they showed, only that the lanterns along the wall had all guttered to blue. Oogie's sack began to sag, slowly, like a bellows losing its breath.

Jack pocketed the winnings and hummed under his breath on the stairs. Outside, for the first time in the history of Hollow Lane, snow came down over the pumpkins, and every window on the street went white.
