Japanese back tattoo with raised katana
Japanese · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman kneels with her back to the camera, holding a katana raised above her head in both hands. A large Japanese-style tattoo covers her upper back and extends onto her arm, with dragon forms and swirling cloud shapes rendered in bold black ink and grey shading. The black and white studio photograph uses soft directional light against a dark backdrop, with draped fabric pooled beneath her.

The castle had burnt so long ago that moss had learned the shape of its towers. Every spring the drought came down off the hills and sat on the valley like a dog on a doorstep, and every spring the old smith climbed the broken stair to the top keep with a blade wrapped in oilcloth under his arm.

He had forged that sword for the last lord, a man who wanted rain more than he wanted an heir. The steel had been folded forty times and quenched in river water drawn at midnight. When the lord died the blade stayed in its scabbard, and the valley forgot it, all but the cloud that gathered over the ruin each dry summer and would not give up its water.
His apprentice, Mabel Orne, was twelve and had stopped asking questions about the dragon. "It lives in the cloud," he told her, unwrapping the blade where the wind could reach it. "It wants to be answered. Raise the sword to it, and do not look at its eyes. Look at the edge." She lifted the steel above her head with both hands. The cloud bent. Under its grey belly she saw a long back, scales like pitch, and something turned in the heights to look down at her.
She kept her eyes on the edge until her arms shook. Then the rain came, but only in a single line that ran from the blade's point across the withered field, a clean strip of green that stopped exactly at the castle wall. The smith laughed until he coughed. Mabel laid the sword down in the moss, and the cloud drew itself back over the hills, satisfied, to wait for another summer.
