So I scooped the thing into a bait bucket with a hand that didn't feel like mine and carried it to the rail, seawater slopping over my boots.

The bell pulsed against my palm, slow as breathing, and the tentacles streamed out behind it, long threads of grey ink that caught the deck lamp. For a moment I wanted to keep it, to carry it home to the flat above the chip shop in Peterhead where nothing moved but the kettle. I told myself I only wanted to check it was still alive. Then I tipped it over the side and watched it open out into the black water, the pink fading to nothing, the trailing lines the last to go.

When I looked up, Mhairi was at the wheelhouse window. She didn't say well done. She just nodded at the gantry, where the next haul was already groaning up from the deep, and I went back to work with salt on my lips and something loose and light in my chest that I couldn't have explained to Dougie even if he'd asked.
