Joker portrait tattoo on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A realistic portrait of the Joker character, with slicked, pale hair, a green-tinged face, red lips and a dark blue coat, fills the upper arm and shoulder. The shading is smooth and painterly, with soft blue and teal washes behind the head and scattered orange and yellow sparks at the lower edge. Colour dominates the composition, which is framed by the shoulder and a dark background.

Brother Anselm had been told the new pigments were safe to grind, so he ground them: blue from lapis that came over the mountains in a leather purse, and green from copper that turned his thumbs the colour of old pennies. The abbot wanted the psalter finished before the feast of Saint Cuthbert. Anselm wanted only to be left alone with the margins.

It was in the margins that the stranger first appeared. Anselm had not painted him. Each morning there was more of him: a man with hair slicked back and wild at the ends, a mouth the red of unripe cherries, and a dark blue coat he wore like a cloak of storm. The brothers blamed the novice Edric, who had been found asleep over the ink pots, but Edric swore on the relics that his hands had been folded all night.

On the last leaf, where the fires of Hell were meant to curl beneath the damned, Anselm found the stranger had already painted them himself. Orange sparks rose from the lower edge of the vellum like a kiln door thrown open, and the man in the coat was turned towards them, grinning as though the flames were a joke someone had told him in confidence.

Anselm sat with his brush dry for a long time. Then he reached for the rose madder, touched the tip to the pan, and added one small spark of his own in the corner, beside the stranger's shoulder, where the blue met the fire.
