Jump leads forming a heart with slogan
Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo
Two jump leads with red and black cables and clamps are arranged into a heart shape, with the clamps meeting at the centre. The words BECAUSE FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION wrap around the heart in black lettering. Bold black outlines, flat red and yellow fills and grey shading on the clamps give a traditional look, and the design is set against plain skin.

The signal at Hollin Halt went dark on the second Tuesday of February, and Ada Pryce was the only one on the platform who thought to walk down the track with the leads over her shoulder. Her father had kept the jump cables in the lamp hut since before the line was electrified, red clamp on one end, black on the other, wrapped in an old feed sack to keep the damp off.

The stationmaster, Mr Lowther, said the battery was finished and the relief train would stop at the next village regardless. Ada said nothing. She knelt beside the grey box in the signal cabinet, clamped the red to the positive post and the black to the earth, and watched the needle lift. Nothing came at first. She rubbed her thumb along the teeth of the clamp the way her father had taught her and waited for the orange glow of the bulb.
When the lamp caught, the platform cheered in the thin way people cheer before breakfast. A porter brought out a flask of tea. Lowther asked where she had learned that, and she told him about the card nailed inside the lamp hut, which read because failure is not an option. Her father had never once been seen reading it, but he had patched that cable with electrical tape a dozen times and never let the card come down.
Afterwards she hung the leads back on their nail, red and black ends touching the way they had been made to, and folded the feed sack beside them so that whoever needed them next would find them dry.
