Nobody on the Dunmere Cut had ever seen a smoothie smile before Bev's order came up, so when the pink cup on the hatch ledge grinned at the heron, the heron had the decency to look embarrassed. Bev wiped her hands on her apron and pretended she had not noticed. The cup was called Dolly, and she had been the best seller on the Marigold for three summers running, which was why Bev kept her under the awning and never let her near the diesel.

Dolly wobbled, and the teal and violet straw, which had been dozing against the rim, swung out like a conductor's baton and tapped him twice on the knuckles.

He stepped back onto the gunwale, the gunwale was wet, and the next thing the canal knew was a large man in a bobble hat sitting in the shallows, holding a dripping beard and a very cross expression. Dolly's smile did not waver. Two sparkles winked either side of her, and a pair of hearts bobbed up from the reeds as if they had been waiting for their cue.

Bev handed him a towel and a plain replacement cup. "Forty pence for the towel," she said. He paid it, drank the free one without a word, and as the Sundowner pulled away, Dolly tipped her lid a fraction towards the stern, which was the nearest thing to a bow Bev had ever seen from a drink.
