Black hand-lettered quote design reading Keep your face always toward the sunshine and shadows will fall behind you, with a feathered arrow and a flowing underline, on a white background.

Keep your face toward the sunshine quote with arrow

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

The design is a hand-lettered quote in black ink on white, set across five lines in mixed capitals and flowing script. A feathered arrow points right beside the words toward the sunshine, and a long swash line runs under always and sunshine. The linework is even and clean with no shading, and the composition is left-aligned with the attribution to Walt Whitman in script at the bottom right.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit yourself on that flat stone, lad, and stop looking back down the valley. Nothing down there wants you, and the mule knows it even if you don't. My grandmother crossed this pass forty times with a sack of salt on her back, and she gave every carrier the same advice: keep your face toward the light, because the shadow always falls behind you, and a man who watches his shadow walks straight into the ditch.

The lad, Tomas, had come up from the lowland village with a debt his father left him and a brother who had gone south for work and never sent word. He hauled on the rope. 'Easy to say, old woman, when your shadow is already behind you.' She laughed so hard the mule snorted. 'Mine has been behind me for sixty years. It gets shorter every season. That is the trick of it.'

They climbed through the thin air while the sun came over the ridge, gold on the snow above them and the cold draining out of the rocks. At the top of the gap Tomas stopped, meaning to take one last look at the valley where he had lost so much. Instead he saw his shadow stretched long across the far slope, pointing down into the wrong country. He turned his face to the sun and kept walking.

A salt merchant told the story at the inn in Ferrin for years afterwards, and always ended it the same way. 'She never once looked at the ground. Her shadow trailed her like a dog, and she let it.'
