Close your eyes quote lettering

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A black ink drawing of handwritten script lettering on a white background, reading Close your eyes, fall in love, stay there, with the name Rumi in small capitals beneath. The strokes vary in weight, with thick downstrokes and thin, flowing joins, and there is no shading or colour. The text is centred with generous white space around it, so the design reads clearly as a standalone quote.

Hasan had stamped passports at the Varnes Ridge crossing for nineteen years, and he had learned that a face told you less than the paperwork stacked beside it. The man at the window this morning had a violin case, a bad cough and a visa that expired in four days. Hasan read the photograph, then the man, then the photograph again, and the man waited with the patience of someone who had waited a long time for other things.

He was going to Lisbon, he said, to find a woman called Ilse who had taught him the second half of a sonata and then gone without finishing it. Hasan asked why a man would come to a border post for that. "Because she told me the rule," the man said. "Close your eyes, fall in love, stay there. I have been doing the first two for eleven years and I am tired of the third."

His supervisor wanted the file closed by noon. Hasan took the refusal form, wrote the reason in capitals, and then stopped. On the back he copied the words he had once seen on his mother's kitchen wall, in her looping hand, the ink gone brown with steam. He slid the form under the glass.

The man read it twice, laughed once, and folded the paper into his coat. The barrier rose for the next car. Hasan closed his eyes for the length of one breath, then called the next name.
