Kettlebell outline on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small outline of a kettlebell sits on the side of an ankle, drawn in a single thin black line with no shading. The foot rests on white bedsheets, and the photograph is in black and white, so the tattoo is the only point of detail. The composition is close and centred on the ankle and heel.

Sit down, the lot of you, and mind the tar bucket. You want to know where the black iron lump on the step of the net loft came from? I'll tell you what my father told me, and he had it from a man who was there.

The smith at Penwick Cross cast them by the hundred in the year the herring failed. Each one had a loop of bar on top so a deckhand could swing it over the gunwale and hold the foot of a seine net down in rough water. Twelve went aboard the Mary Ruth the winter she struck the Brisk Rocks. The crew were lost, all but one lad who clung to a spar until the lifeboat found him. He swore the weights had gone over ahead of the hull, and that the loop of the last one had caught his sleeve like a hand.

Nobody believed him. The sea gives back what it likes, and it kept eleven weights and sent the twelfth rolling up the beach at Sallow Quay, tangled in a knot of brown net. Ada Vosper took it home because her gate latch was loose and she had a long memory for things that were owed her. She hung the weight from the latch on a length of rope, and every morning for forty years she lifted it, felt the pull of it, and let it fall so the gate would swing true.

When they cleared her cottage, the weight was still on the latch, worn bright where her palm had been. The boy who carried it down to the loft said it was heavier than it looked. I told him that was the whole point of a weight. Set it on your step, and it will keep the door from blowing shut.
