Eye in triangle, heart and square on a leg

Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

Three small outlined symbols sit in a vertical line on the outer lower leg: a triangle containing an eye, an open heart and a square with a small inner shape. The linework is thin and even in black ink, with no shading. The legs rest on a white bedsheet, and the tattoos are the only colour contrast in the frame.

The lift at St Aldric's sticks between the second and third floors every night at ten past three, and every night you wait with your palm flat on the rail, counting the hum like a pulse. Tonight the trolley beside you carries a grey cardboard box marked for the fourth floor, lost property, with a sticker in green biro that reads ONLY TO SISTER MARGARET. You have carried worse up these stairs. You once carried a piano stool and a wedding cake on the same shift.

Ward Four is dim, lit only by the blue glow of the monitors and the lamp at the nurses' station, where a triangle of light falls across the lino like a warning. Sister Margaret takes the box without looking up. She is writing in the big ledger, and she tells you to wait. Her pen rests beside a symbol she has drawn in the margin: an eye inside a triangle, a heart, and a square with a smaller square set in its centre, all in thin black ink. She has drawn them every night for thirty years, she says, the way other people count sheep.

Inside the box, under a folded cardigan, you find a tin of pear drops and a bundle of cards tied with a shoelace. Each card carries the same three shapes, drawn by different hands, some in crayon, some in biro. The top one says in careful capitals: FOR THE NIGHT PORTER, WHO ALWAYS KNOWS WHICH FLOOR. You read it twice. Somewhere below, the lift gives its small sigh and begins to move.

Margaret still doesn't look up. 'Lost property,' she says. 'Things people forgot they were waiting for.' You take the tin and the card, and on the stairs down you eat one pear drop, and when the lift finally arrives at the ground floor, the doors open exactly where they should.
