Heart padlock and key wrist tattoos
Forearm · Colour · Photo
Two inner wrists are shown side by side, each with a single tattoo. The left shows a pink heart-shaped padlock with decorative scrollwork and a keyhole, and the right shows an ornate key with a heart-shaped bow and a detailed shaft. The shading is soft and the outlines are clean, set against plain skin in a close, evenly lit composition.

The snow had sealed the pass for nine days, and by the ninth the guests at the Hollin Gate had stopped asking when it would lift. Agnes Tallow, who kept the inn, only went on sweeping the flags and counting the candles. At the back of the cellar there was a tin box of things left behind by travellers, and that was where she found the pink heart padlock, its scrollwork gone soft with rust at the edges, and the little gold key that had come with it.

The label, in a hand she knew from the ledger, said only: for whoever comes back. Agnes remembered the man. Thomas Greave had stayed one winter night in the year her mother died, a carter with a bad cough, and he had talked of a girl in the valley town who would not marry him until he could show her a lock that opened to one key alone. He had bought the pair from a tinker on the moor. He had never come back for them.
The wind rose at dusk and rattled the shutters. Agnes sat by the fire with the two pieces on her knee and fitted the key to the lock. It turned stiffly, then sprang open with a click like a small bird landing. Folded tight inside the heart was a slip of paper with a name, a date, and an address three valleys over. She read it twice. Then she put on her coat and her boots and went to find the path.
When the pass cleared in spring, a woman in a blue shawl came up the road asking for a room. Agnes gave her the warmest one and said nothing of the box. At supper the woman turned the gold key over in her fingers and asked where it had come from, and Agnes told her the whole of it, from the carter's cough to the tinker's price, while the fire burned down to a red glow.
