Other · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows two arms bent at the elbow, each with a black ink tattoo. One arm carries an infinity symbol merged with an outlined heart that has a keyhole cut into it, and the other carries a solid black key with an ornate bow. The linework is bold and uniform with flat solid fills, set against pale skin and a plain background.

You are the only locksmith left in Vellen, where the castle gates have been shut for eleven winters because nobody remembers which key opens them. The queen's steward climbs the hill each morning with a basket of iron, and each morning you turn the wards over in your palm and tell him the same thing: the lock is not broken, only waiting.

On the twelfth winter a girl called Ysolde walks in from the salt marsh with a key wrapped in oilcloth. It is long and black, its bow cut like two looped ribbons, and she says her grandmother swore it fits any door that was ever shut on purpose. You take it to the forge, heat it until it glows the colour of a cherry, and file the bit down to a whisper of teeth.

The gates stay shut. When you finally press the blade into the old keyhole, the lock gives a sound like a bell rung underwater, and a small plate slides out of the iron and lands on the cobbles between you. It is shaped like a heart, scored with two loops that never end, and where the keyhole should be there is a second keyhole, cut cleanly through the middle.

Ysolde turns the plate over, finds nothing on the back but a thumbprint in the metal, and laughs. You fit the key to the heart, and it turns without a sound. Then you walk home by the marsh road, the two of you passing the key back and forth like a secret too good to spend.
