A grey, shaded key tattoo on one forearm and a red and grey heart-shaped padlock with a keyhole on another forearm, in traditional style.

Key and heart padlock on forearms

Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two forearms are shown side by side. On the left, a shaded grey key with ornate scroll bows sits on the skin, and on the right, a heart-shaped padlock with scrollwork and a black keyhole is filled with red. The bold outlines and solid shading give the piece a traditional look, and the two designs are placed close together so they read as a pair.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The shop on Vellum Row still had its gas lamps lit when you finally turned the key that nobody had cut in forty years. The sound it made was the sound of a door in a house you had left. Mrs Okonedo at the counter had warned you the mechanism would not hold. Brass ages, she said, and hearts go soft in the damp.

The padlock was the one your sister Ines had bought from a stall at the Ninth Ring market, its red enamel chipped where it had hung on the gate of the orchard tower. Nobody had ever opened it. The registry listed it as sealed by a founder whose name had been scraped from the records, and the story went that the only key had sunk in the lower canals the year the water rose.

The key you carried was the one you had found in your grandfather's map office, folded inside a tin of drawing pins. Grey, bowed with scrollwork, it slid into the keyhole as if it had been waiting. It would not turn. You pushed, you swore, you laughed at yourself. Then you noticed you had been turning it the way one locks a door behind a departure, so you stopped, and turned it the other way, towards you.

The shackle sprang free into your palm, warm as a pulse. Beyond the gate the orchard was in bloom, the trees white against a sky the exact red of the enamel, and Ines stood under the first branch holding two cups of tea, waiting as though she had never left either.
