Matching infinity heart and arrow tattoos on wrists
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two people's inner forearms are shown side by side, each with a matching fine line tattoo of an infinity symbol, with a small heart and an arrow passing through the loop. The linework is thin and solid black, with no shading, and the photograph is greyscale. The upper arm sits diagonally across the frame, with a hand at the top right, and a silver charm bracelet hangs on the lower wrist.

Mabel Corran kept the ropewalk at Scarrow Quay, and every spring she tied the same knot into two halves of a broken hawser: a loop that folded back on itself, with no end to it. Her sister Ada sailed that year on the Hesper's Wake, a cod boat bound for the banks off Iceland, and the two of them agreed the loop would stay in Mabel's keeping until one came home to claim the other half.

The Wake was gone eleven weeks. Mabel walked the harbour wall each evening with the rope folded in her apron, and the gulls learned her step. Men coming in from the north said the boat had been seen off the Faroes, then nothing at all. Some said a squall had taken her. Mabel did not believe them and did not argue. She sat with the rope on her knee and turned the loop over, and each time her thumb found the crossing point, a small hard heart of tar she had worked into the strands, she counted to seven and began again.
On the seventy-third day a boy ran up the wall shouting that a sail was in. It was not the Wake. It was a smaller boat, and in its stern, one arm bound in sailcloth, sat Ada, grinning like a fool. She held up her half of the rope. The splice at its end had been wound into the shape of an arrowhead, pointing back toward the quay.
Mabel took the free end and said nothing. She sat down on the wet stones and pulled, and the loop went round the two of them.
