Two forearms are shown, each with a single maple leaf tattoo drawn in fine black linework with light shading in the veins. The leaves are similar in size and sit on the inner forearm, with the stems curving downward. The background is a white brick wall, and the people's hands are clasped in the centre of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The maple by the Dunmore allotment gate had been dropping its leaves since the first week of October, and Nell Harrow had long stopped sweeping them. She carried them home in her coat pockets instead, flattened and damp, until the kitchen table was covered with them like a second tablecloth.

Her brother Owen came over from Leeds with a biscuit tin and a bad cold. He sat across from her while she sorted the leaves by how many points they had, and he kept saying the veins looked like roads on a map of somewhere nobody had bothered to name. "Pick one," he said. "That's the one you'll never lose."

She chose the widest, the one with its stem bent like a question. They drove it to a shop above a bakery on Mill Street, where a woman with reading glasses on a chain traced the leaf onto tracing paper with a pencil that barely touched the page. Owen wanted his own copy of the same leaf. Nell told him the trees had a habit of looking alike, and that was the whole point, and he told her she sounded exactly like their mother.

Years later the tin still sits on the windowsill. Inside, under the biscuits nobody ever ate, is the tracing paper, soft at the folds, with two pencilled stems that lean the same way. Nell keeps it there so the autumn can come in every year without asking permission.
