Fine line script tattoo on the wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a thin black cursive script tattoo wrapping around the inner wrist. Only part of the words is readable, and the lettering is set against warm skin with a dark sleeve and jeans in the background. Another person's hand holds the wearer's hand, which is in the foreground and slightly out of focus.

By the time the mule train reached Hollin Gap, Ruth had stopped counting the switchbacks, and you had stopped pretending the cold was only in your fingers. Your brother Tom walked ahead with the lantern, humming the same three bars of a hymn he had never finished, and every so often he turned back to check that you were still there.

The letter had come up with the carrier at Michaelmas. It said the mine at Greystones had closed for the winter and the company wanted no more men on the upper road. Ruth folded it into her apron pocket and said nothing, the way she said nothing about most things. Now the snow lay thin across the path and the wind came off the scree like something alive, and you realised she was waiting for you to speak first.
At the top of the pass the cairn stood blue in the dusk. Someone had scratched initials into the largest stone, and beneath them a line of words had gone soft with weather. Tom set the lantern down and traced it with his glove. Only the middle was legible: me an, and then the rock had taken the rest. You never learned the ending, and perhaps that was the point of going over at all.
Ruth slid her hand into yours and closed her fingers around it, warm through two layers of wool. Below, the valley lights came on one by one, the mine among them, and you went down the far side without looking back, the lantern swinging between you like a question nobody needed to finish.
