Realistic colour tattoo of a silver key with a pink ribbon bow and the words follow your heart along the shaft, on the side of a torso.

Key with pink bow and follow your heart script

Realism · Ribs · Mixed · Photo

A detailed key with a heart-shaped bow is shown in pink ribbon and grey metal, with a black keyhole on the bow. The words follow your heart run in black script along the key's shaft, which is shaded to look three-dimensional. The tattoo sits on the side of the torso, with a white garment at the top of the frame and soft, even lighting.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The band packed up at half eleven, same as every Saturday, and I was left with the lights half down and the floor sticky from spilt lemonade. Mr Crane handed me the ring of keys to lock the back stairs, and there on the big brass one was your pink ribbon, still tied in its bow, the way you always fastened things you meant to come back for.

I stood on the landing a long while before I went up. The room above the hall is the one you used to sew in, with the window that looks down over the pier to the sea, and nobody has opened it since the spring. I turned the key and the lock gave on the first try, which surprised me more than it should have. Your dress patterns were still pinned to the wall, and someone had left a tin of pins on the sill.

I'm not writing to scold you for going to London. I'd have gone too if the hall had let me. I'm writing because on the back of the bow, in your careful pencil, you've written follow your heart, and I've been reading it over until the words stopped meaning anything at all.

So I've kept the key. I'll leave the ribbon tied. When you're ready to come back for it, you'll know where the door is, and if you don't come, at least the window still faces the sea.

Love, Nell
