The padlock on the back doors of the Constance had rusted solid the winter Dad died, and nobody on the cut would touch it. I kept the key on a loop of waxed cord round my finger, a little brass thing with a chip out of the bow, and I turned it every morning like a prayer I'd stopped believing in.

Mum said to leave the lock alone. Harold at the Hillmorton lock said a locksmith in Rugby could cut a new one for forty quid. I didn't want a new one. Every evening I sat on the gunwale at the tail of the lock with a heel of bread for the ducks, watching the water pour out through the gates, and I thought about what Dad kept behind that door: his ledgers, a tin of Typhoo, his good boots that never once got wet.

In March the frost came early and the gates groaned all night. In the wheelhouse drawer I found a sliver of paper with one line in his blocky capitals: THE KEY IS NOT FOR THE DOOR. Nothing else. I sat with it an hour while the tea went cold, feeling stupid and furious in equal measure.

Then I noticed the keyhole on the cabin doors had been painted over, the wood a fresh grey skin, and when I scraped at it with my thumbnail the iron showed through. Under the bench was a small box bound in iron, with a slot exactly the shape of the brass on my finger. Inside lay a folded map of the cut, one lock ringed in pencil, and a single word beneath it: yours. I slid the key in and it turned as if it had been waiting for me all along.
