King and Queen script tattoos on two hands
Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are held together in a black and white photograph. One hand carries the word King in flowing script with a small crown above it, and the other carries Queen in matching script with a crown above. The lettering uses smooth, bold black linework with soft shading, and the composition is close and centred on the hands.

The brewer was due at eleven, and Idris still had the Thistle Arms fascia half-stripped on the trestles. Nell Rudd stood at the foot of the ladder with her arms folded, saying the old crown had to come down because it looked like a bishop's hat. Idris said the lettering was the real trouble. Every loop he had painted for her in twenty years wanted to run off the edge of the board.

Then draw it on me, she said, and held out her left hand, palm up. He laughed, because he had only ever worked on wood and glass, but she was serious. He took a fine nib from his apron pocket and wrote a small crown on the heel of her thumb, then QUEEN along the ridge of her palm in a looping script, the Q swinging down past her wrist. Her husband Tom came in from the yard, wiping sawdust on his trousers, and offered his own hand without a word. Idris gave him KING across the knuckles, and the ink held better than he expected.
By half past ten the two of them were perched on the bar with their fingers laced, arguing about whether the crown should sit above the word or beside it. Idris let them argue. He had already sketched the new board on brown paper: the crown first, then the letters running gold along the wood, the tail of the Q curling back like a hand reaching for another hand.
When the brewer's van pulled up, Nell went out first, still wearing the faint ghost of QUEEN at her wrist. The brewer studied the board for a long time before he asked who the lettering was for. 'Whoever is left to keep the place,' Nell said, and Tom took her hand in both of his.
