Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The image is a collage of several close photographs of one forearm tattoo. The design shows kitchen utensils in bold outlined drawings, including a whisk, a round sieve, a potato masher and a slotted spoon, arranged in a vertical row along the arm. The work uses black and grey ink with simple shading and hatching, set against bare skin on a plain background.

The whisk went in the crate first, because Auntie Dora said a house without one was a house that had given up. We were clearing her kitchen on Skerra on a grey Tuesday, the only day the ferry ran, and the drawers stuck with salt. Mum wrapped each piece in a page of the parish newsletter while I sat on the step with two boxes, one marked keep and one marked sea, which is what the islanders call the tip.

The potato masher had a split handle mended with brown tape. The sieve still held a fine mesh of mackerel scales from the last fish she'd strained for the Pengelly boys, who never once said thank you but always came back for more. The slotted spoon had lifted every cockle she ever boiled, and the ladle, dented on one side, had served soup to the lifeboat crew the winter the Mary Ann went onto the Gaunt rocks. Dora never talked about that night. She just kept the ladle where her hand would find it in the dark.

By four o'clock the crate was full and the sky had cleared enough to show the mainland lights. I carried it down to the quay myself. The skipper, a man called Lewis with forearms like bread dough, peered inside and asked whether I wanted it loaded as cargo or taken as luggage. Luggage, I said. It was the only thing on the boat she would have wanted to sit with.
