At the Michaelmas dance in Thorne Hollow, the fiddler stopped playing when the Greave brothers started laughing at Nan Ashby's boots. Nan had come down from the mill loft with cat hair on her shawl, as she always did, and the whole room knew her as the woman with the cats. Nobody asked her to dance. She stood by the cider barrel with her hands in her pockets and waited for the tune to start again.

Tobias Greave came over with a pint in each fist and a grin on his face. He said the cats would be wanting their supper, and that she had better hurry home before they ate the rafters. Nan took her hands out of her pockets. Across the knuckles of each one a travelling man had inked letters years before, and now the room could read them: C A T L A D Y, four letters on each hand, and the flowers of the hedgerow curling up from her wrists. Tobias read them aloud, and the laughter started again, though it sounded thinner than before.

Nan said nothing. She closed both fists and set them on the trestle table between the cups, one beside the other, and left them there. The fiddler, who had been watching from his stool, found his tune and played it through. Tobias put his hand down on the wood near her knuckles, felt the weight of them, and took his hand back without a word.

At first light the cats came down the lane in a row, grey and ginger and one black one with a torn ear, and sat at the hall door as though they had been invited. Tobias Greave walked past them with his hat in his hands and never said a word about the letters again.
