Rose with leaves flash design

Traditional · Black and grey · Flash

The drawing shows an open rose in profile with a tight centre bud, layered ruffled petals and two pointed leaves to the right. The outlines are bold and even, with fine hatching on the leaves and short strokes marking the petal folds. It is rendered in black ink on white with no grey tones or colour, and the design is centred on a round white backdrop.

The last bucket of roses had sat under the strip light since midnight, and Nell was counting the petals on the one with the tightest centre, the way her gran had taught her to judge a bloom that would last until Friday. The wholesale hall behind the bus station smelled of diesel and wet cardboard, and the shutter on the next stall rattled down at ten past four.

A man in a long coat stopped at her trestle and asked for a rose that would still look like a rose in a week. She told him everything she sold was cut, and cut things went. He shook his head and unfolded a sheet of paper from his inside pocket. It was the back of a bus timetable, and on it someone had drawn a rose in biro: a bold outline, petals frilled like ironed cotton, a bud pinched shut in the middle, and two pointed leaves with the shading worked in close, careful lines.

"She left on the five-twelve," he said. "She said she'd come back when something in the city stopped changing. I thought I'd bring her a thing that doesn't change."

Nell looked at the drawing for a long time. Then she took the cut rose he'd come for, wrapped it in brown paper, and tucked it into his hands without charging him. She laid the timetable on the lightbox under her counter, traced every line in black marker onto a fresh card, and pinned the copy above the till. When she turned round the man had gone, and the first van was reversing into the bay with its hazards blinking orange over the wet tarmac.
