A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Tomas, your mother rang to say you have been down to the shop on Hessle Road with a sheet of paper covered in green lettering, and that you spent two hours pointing at it like a man choosing a horse at Beverley. She sent me a photograph. Hold Fast sits at the top left, and somebody has ringed Slow Burn in biro, then written Play Hard beside it with a question mark, as if I would know what that means.

I do know what it means. When I married your grandad at the registry office on Anlaby Road, we had no sheet at all, only a bus timetable and a tin of pear drops. He wanted Stay True and I wanted Free Bird, and we argued until the registrar cleared her throat. We settled on Full Hope and Home Sick, which was a daft pairing, because he was homesick every day we lived in Leeds and I was never sure what I would find when I came back from my shifts. It worked anyway. Pairs are like that. One word pulls the other back.

So here is my advice, which you did not ask for. Don't choose the bold ones for the photographs. Choose the two you can say to each other across a kitchen table when the kettle has boiled dry and nobody has the energy for a row. I have enclosed the list I wrote out for your grandad on the back of a gas bill, in pencil, with the words he picked crossed through in ink. You will see Open Eyes survived every draft. Bring a proper pen to the church. Love, Nan.
