Lady Justice with scales on a calf

Realism · Calf · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a blindfolded woman with long flowing hair, holding a set of scales in one hand and a sword in the other, with her head and body turned slightly. The linework is soft and the shading is detailed, with smooth grey gradients on the skin, hair and drape of the fabric. The blindfold has a small blue accent, and the two photos show the same tattoo from different angles on a lower leg.

Now sit down, the lot of you, and leave the teapot alone, it's older than your mothers. You want to know why the front parlour has that lady on the wall? Mr Ansell painted her in 1911, the year he owed my father forty pounds in lodging. Blindfolded, mind, with a blue ribbon knotted at the back so she couldn't see the rain coming in under the sash. Her scales hung from one hand and her sword rested on her shoulder, and she never once looked down at what she was weighing.

Mr Ansell swore she was the only honest thing in Pellow Bay. The fishermen came up the steps with their caps in their hands and asked her to weigh their catch, and she tipped the pans for whoever had the warmer hands. Nobody complained, because nobody had ever seen her lift the sword.

The winter Captain Rowe drowned off the point, his widow climbed those steps in black with a shoebox under her arm. She set it on the parlour table and asked the lady to weigh a thing she could not say aloud. That night the left pan dipped under the box, and the right pan rose to meet nothing at all.

In the morning the blue ribbon lay folded on the hearth, neat as a letter, and the box was gone. Ask me what was inside and I'll tell you what I told the constable: a cockle shell, a wedding ring, and a clean pair of gloves. Now finish your toast. The tide is turning, and so is my patience.
