The wolf of Hask had learned his letters from the schoolmaster's primer, and he kept his spectacles on a cord so he could read the tide book aloud to anyone who asked. Nobody on the island asked him twice. On the night the causeway was due to flood early, Maren Holt came down the shingle with her grandmother's lantern in one hand and a list of medicines in the other, and the wolf was already waiting by the stone marker, reading the sky.

"The tide turns at midnight, not eleven," he said. "The book says so, and I have checked it against the moon." Maren did not argue. Her grandmother had said he would be honest, and that was the worst thing about him. He took the lantern from her without asking, held it close to the page, and let the light lie across the figures until they stood up plain. Then he handed it back, its glass already sooty from his breath.
They crossed together, the wolf setting the pace, the black water sliding over the stones on either side like wet cloth. Halfway over he stopped and looked back at the mainland lights. "Your grandmother lent me that book thirty winters ago," he said. "I never gave it back. I wanted to see whether she would come for it." Maren understood then that the medicines had been an excuse, and that her grandmother had sent her knowing it.
At the far end he bowed his grey head so the spectacles slid down his muzzle. "Walk home by your own light now. The tide will not wait while I finish the chapter." He turned and went back out onto the causeway, reading as he walked, and Maren climbed the hill with the lantern swinging, watching the small bright flame of it move ahead of her like someone who knew the way.
