Small cross on the inner wrist
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo of a simple cross-like symbol sits on the inner wrist of a hand held loosely up near a striped woven fabric. The linework is thin and clean, with a short angled crossbar, and the ink is solid black with no shading or colour. The composition is close and cropped, with the wrist in the centre and dark clothing filling the background.

Ilse, the frost came down the Hollin pass four days early, so I have spent the week on my knees at the stones with a chisel and a bad temper. The Crown wants every boundary stone between the pass and the Cask Lakes re-marked before the thaw, and there are one hundred and nine of them, each cut with the same small cross. The upright is a plain stroke. The crossbar sits short and tilted, a finger's width below the top, because Father said a true cross leans toward the way home. A shepherd who cannot read the king's writing can still find his path by that lean.

Yesterday at stone ninety-four I found the mark already cut. Same lean, same thin lines, cut so cleanly I thought it was ours at first. Then I saw the date beside it, eleven years old, and a letter S scratched under the crossbar, which was never Father's habit. Someone else walked this ridge and chose the same angle. I sat in the wind for an hour trying to decide whether that made the country feel smaller or larger.
I did not recut it. I left that stone alone and cut my own mark on the next one along, the crossbar leaning the same way, so the two of them stand together like people who have agreed on something without speaking. The ledger says I have finished ninety-five. The ledger does not say why I was late for supper with the others.
The pass will close on Tuesday. I am walking down with the last of the lamp oil and the chisel in my coat. Tell Mother the cross is honest, even if the drovers call it crooked. I will be at the gate by the bell, and you can read the lean for yourself.
