Hamsa hand with eye on a forearm
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A hamsa hand sits on the inner forearm, with a detailed eye in its centre and leaf-like patterns across the palm and fingers. The linework is dark and dense, with the eye picked out in green, yellow and rainbow-toned shading. The arm is raised against pale, creased fabric in soft natural light.

The eye in the palm had been awake since the ferry left Hastings, the old woman said, and it would not sleep until the last lamp on the harbour wall went out. Her grandson Tomasz did not believe her. He was nine and believed only in the tide tables his father pinned by the kettle. But he watched the lamp anyway, because she had sent him to fetch the lantern oil and he had nothing else to do with his hands.

The lamp was the last one on the wall, and it guttered every time a gull landed on the rail. Below it the water had gone the colour of slate, and in its green sheen a light moved, a small rainbow spilling off the edge of the stone like oil on a puddle. Tomasz knelt and watched it bend and break. It was only the moon through the spray, he decided. Then the rainbow closed like an eyelid and opened again, and it looked straight at him.
He ran home with the oil slopping over his fingers. His grandmother was waiting with her palm turned up on the table, the leaf-patterned lines of her hand dark in the candlelight, and she did not ask what he had seen. She only pressed the warm oil into his palm, folded his fingers over it, and said the eye was honest but never kind, and that the trick was to be seen by it only at the end of the night, when you had nothing left to hide. Tomasz closed his hand. Outside, the last lamp went out, and the harbour kept its one open eye on the dark water until morning.
