Layered belly chain on bare midriff
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close crop of a bare midriff and waist, with two gold chains worn low across the hips and a crystal-set teardrop pendant hanging at the centre. Only the edge of a dark tattoo is visible at the right side of the waist, too cropped to judge its linework or style. The skin is warm-toned, the background is out of focus, and the image has no shading or colour ink beyond the tattoo edge.

The chains came over the Kessel Pass in a mule's panniers, wrapped in oilcloth so the damp wouldn't dull them. My aunt Ilse counted every link twice before she let me touch the bundle. There were forty-one yards of fine gold-plated curb, two runs of finer cable, and at the bottom of the last box a teardrop pendant set with crystals that she swore caught the lamplight like rain on a wire.

Nobody in Halsbach wanted belly chains in the autumn. The women bought wool and salt and the men bought knives, so the box stayed under the counter while I polished the pendant each evening with a chamois, watching the lamp swim in its facets. Ilse said the stone had been cut for a dancer in the capital who never came back for it, and that was why it sulked.
The snow came early that year and closed the pass for nine days. On the tenth, a rider came down through the drifts with his hood up and his horse steaming, asking for something small and bright to take down to the valley. He didn't haggle. He laid two coins on the counter and tapped the teardrop once with a gloved finger, as if checking it was real.
I watched him ride off with the chains looped over his saddle horn. Ilse said that was the trouble with stones that had waited: they went wherever they liked. The next spring a letter arrived, folded small and sealed with green wax, holding nothing but a pressed edelweiss and a single line in careful capitals saying the chain had found its way home.
