Leaf and stripe bands across fingers

Botanical · Hand · Colour · Photo

A hand held palm-down against a plain light background, with reddish-brown designs wrapped around the fingers. Each finger carries a band of parallel stripes with a small leaf or botanical motif, drawn in a fine, even line with solid fills. The ink is a single warm brown-red tone, and the black thread bracelet with tassels and the simple black marks on the nails sit against the pale skin.

The henna paste was my father's last argument with the sea. He crushed the dried leaves in the galley mortar the night before we cleared the bar at Sarrow, working until the green turned the colour of old brick. Mariam, who kept the bread ovens, said it was bad luck to paint anyone before a crossing, so naturally I wanted to be the first.

We were nineteen days out, the wind steady from the south, when Mariam finally sat me on an upturned crate by the rail. She drew each band the way my father drew them on wedding cloths: three fine stripes, a gap the width of a fingernail, then a sprig of leaf laid across the top like a stitch. She kept her tongue between her teeth the whole time and swore at the spray when it blurred her lines.

The storm came on the twenty-second day and the paste ran in the rain, so by dawn the stripes had bled into rust-coloured smudges. The cook laughed and said the sea had taken my wedding rings. I didn't mind. The leaf on the middle finger held out longest, a small dark shape the water couldn't quite shift.

When the headland of Sarrow came up grey on the eighth morning, I looked for the stripes and found only the faintest ghosts of them. My father was waiting on the quay with his ledger under one arm. He took my hand, looked at the middle finger for a long moment, and wrote something small in the margin.
