Bow and script words on hand and forearm
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a hand resting on a pink rug, showing a black linework bow on the back of the wrist. Script lettering reading Love runs across one finger, and Trust Yourself is written in cursive on the inner forearm. The ink is solid black with no shading, and the bright red nail polish and zebra print behind the hand make up the composition.

Every Saturday I climbed the broken stair with a reel of black silk ribbon and a tin of brass tacks, because the fair committee wanted the old arch dressed for the summer. Mrs Dunning, who ran the teashop below, said a ruin ought to look as though it was expecting company.

I tied bows on the iron hooks where the portcullis chains had rusted through. Each one took three goes, and the loops never sat even no matter how I pulled them. Harriet Sayer came up with me to hold the tacks and laughed at my fussing. She had a biro that had run dry, so she pressed her hand to the warm stone and wrote on the back of her own fingers, then turned them to show me. Love, in looping letters, ran over one knuckle as if it had been there for years.
I asked her how she knew which letters to trust. She said she didn't, she simply made the first mark and let the rest follow. I laughed and told her that was no advice at all, and she shrugged and tucked the tacks into my pocket.
When the committee came up at dusk to inspect, every hook had its bow except one. I had left the last loop loose on purpose. The wind caught it and pulled it into a shape I could never have tied, and Harriet said nothing, only stood beside me and let it flutter.
