Leaf with tree and branches line drawing

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

A bold black ink drawing of a leaf shape, with a tree trunk rising through the centre and branches spreading into the upper leaf. Smaller leaves, berries and stems fill the outer sections, with solid black areas and fine hatched detail. The design is drawn in black on a plain white background with no colour.

The leaf came out of the folder face down, between a visa and a sheet of carbon paper, and Pell Anand almost missed it. She had worked the Harrow Quay crossing for eleven years and knew the shape of a thing that was hiding something. This was too thin to be contraband and too careful to be a joke. Someone had drawn it in black ink, a leaf the size of a palm, and inside its outline a whole tree had grown up from the stem: trunk, forking limbs, a crowd of smaller leaves, and along the lower edge clusters of berries strung like beads.

"Is it for a school?" she asked, though the answer was already in the way the man's hands had stopped moving.

He was Tomas Veil, according to his papers, and he said his mother had drawn it the winter before she left the valley. She had drawn one every year, he said, from the last leaf to fall off the old ash by the well, and she had put a tree inside each one so the next leaf would know where it came from. The rules allowed paper with ink on it to be held for inspection. Pell turned the leaf to the lamp. Light came through the thin places where the ink was sparse, and the branches seemed to lean towards the stem as if reaching for water.

She counted the berries without meaning to. Eleven on the left, fourteen on the right. Then she stamped the form, handed the leaf back and said it was clear to pass. Tomas folded it along the midrib, careful as a letter, and the last thing she saw was the stem running off the bottom edge of the page, unfinished, the way a root keeps going beneath a field.
