The show had been dying for three winters when Marta Lusk, who rode the last grey horse, found the whale at the bottom of the wagon. It was a little thing of pale wood, no longer than her forearm, its tail lifted like a question. Her father had won it at a fair in Lincolnshire from a man who swore it had come off a Greenland ship.

Nobody believed the bubbles. The ringmaster, Ansel Crouch, kept a ledger of unpaid rent and a big top with more holes than canvas. But on wet mornings, when the fen mist lay across the field, Marta would set the whale on the caravan step and two small beads of water would gather on the wood beside its mouth and drift off into the grass. She said it was breathing. Ansel said it was condensation and sold the trombone to pay for coal.

In March the crowds stopped coming altogether. The horses went to a farm near Boston, the clowns went to bingo halls in Spalding, and Marta packed the whale in a biscuit tin lined with a folded tent flap. She took the train to Skegness, where the sea was grey and loud, and walked out along the groyne until the spray reached her shoes.

She knelt and set the whale on a flat stone at the water's edge. A wave came in, went out, and when she looked back the stone was wet and the whale was gone. Two bubbles rose beside the rocks and popped. She laughed for the first time since the autumn, then walked home the long way along the shore.
