Right, sit down, the lot of you, and stop pretending you remember Miss Halloran's tea urn. I'm going to tell you about the Pritchard boy's dog, because nobody else in this hall was there the night the snow came down over Carrow Hill and the dog went out after the milk van and didn't come back.

Ben Pritchard was nine. He had a mongrel called Biscuit with one ear up and one ear thinking about it, and on the Tuesday that Biscuit slipped his rope, the whole village went looking with torches. Mrs Ackroyd from the post office swore she saw him by the chapel wall. Her husband swore she'd been at the sherry. But Ben didn't wait for the grown-ups. He took his dad's old lantern and followed the prints.

They ran from the back gate, up past the mill race, and where the frost lay thin you could see them plain as ink: three soft pads, then three more, with a little stagger where Biscuit had stopped to sniff at something. Ben followed them over two stiles and a frozen pond until the trail went into the quarry and stopped dead at the edge, as if the dog had simply decided to fly.

He was sitting on the ledge below, licking his own paw, looking up at the lantern as if it were the one that had got lost. Ben said afterwards he never told anyone how he got down. He only said the prints had led him straight to the place, every one of them pointing the right way.
