The kettle has boiled dry twice since breakfast and I have let it, watching the trawlers nose back into Porthmellow one at a time like tired dogs. Mr Pascoe says the mackerel have gone north again, so the bait shed is shut and the boats are only going out for pollock. I found your ball of embroidery thread in the drawer under the tide tables, the faded green and the orange, and the bit of purple you swore you had lost. You braided it into that bracelet the summer you were fourteen and refused to take it off, even to swim.

I have been turning over what you said on the breakwater, that everything we hold on to is only ever on loan. I didn't answer you. Mum used to say the sea takes what it likes and gives back the rest, usually at low tide and usually the thing we'd rather keep. The cups in the cupboard are chipped from all the years we handled them too hard, and the van that sold crab on the slipway has rusted into the hedge at Trewellard.

So I am leaving the kettle on the stove, unplugged, and I am posting you the thread with the knot still in it. Unpick it or don't, that's your business. I'll be on the quay on Sunday, watching the boats come in with the light behind them, and I am not going to fuss over it any more. Let it be, love.
