Let it be script with small cross on wrist
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a script tattoo reading Let it be, followed by a small cross, across the inner wrist. The linework is thin and even, and the letters are rendered in a pale, almost white ink that sits lightly against the skin. The composition is tight and centred on the wording, with the soft background out of focus.

Dear Nell,

The galley fire has gone out twice since the squall, and Cook Harrow says I'll learn to light it with my eyes shut. The potatoes boil to paste and the captain has stopped asking for them. Harrow stands at the range singing the same three bars over and over, his mother's hymn, and when I asked him the words he said, let it be, lad, and went back to stirring.
Then there's the matter of the silver. Eleven spoons went missing from the mess tin on Tuesday, and Mr Pardoe swore it was me, being the only one below with my hand in the sugar. Harrow said nothing to me about it. That night he left a tin of ship's biscuit on my bunk, its lid scratched with a small cross. By morning Pardoe had found the spoons wrapped in a rag under his own pillow, which says nothing good about Pardoe.
I wanted to march up to the bridge and tell the mate what I thought. Harrow caught my arm at the foot of the ladder and said some things are not ours to mend, and the sea keeps its own accounts. I called that a coward's wisdom. He only smiled and said it was the kind you pay for with patience.
So I've let it be, Nell. I'm writing this by lamplight with the ship easing on her heel and the kettle beginning to sing. Tell Mother I'm eating properly, and that Harrow sends his regards and wants a jar of your damson jam when we make Liverpool.
Your loving brother, Tom
