Let's Rock script on a wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo is two lines of red handwritten script reading Let's Rock, set on the inner wrist and forearm of a light-skinned arm. The linework is a consistent, moderately thin single-needle line with looped letters and a flowing baseline. The plain pale wall behind the arm keeps the focus on the red ink, and the photo is taken straight on.

The amp hummed through the wall of the rehearsal room long after the others had gone home, and I sat on the stairwell of the Hollis Street building with my sleeve pushed back, reading the words I'd had written on me in a basement in Deptford. Dev had insisted on red, because the bass player's mother had once told him red was the only colour that doesn't fade into a bruise. I'd laughed. Now the ink sat under the strip light like a thing I'd argued myself into and couldn't argue out of.

The needle had been a squat little man with reading glasses pushed up into grey hair, who hummed Fleetwood Mac between passes and never once looked at my face. He asked what I wanted and I said two words, and he said that's a terrible tattoo for a person who doesn't know what she's doing, and then he drew it anyway, loops and all, freehand, with the apostrophe sitting over the t like a little flag. It took eleven minutes. I counted, because counting was easier than feeling.
The bus came round at half past one. I rode it to the end of the line with the windows fogged, and when the driver asked where I was headed I didn't have an answer ready, so I just stayed on. The band had a gig in Brighton on Saturday and nobody had asked me to play it, and that was fine. Let's rock, the wrist said, every time I reached for a handrail. It was a bit daft. It was also the only instruction I'd given myself in a year that I'd actually followed.
