Lettering diamond on a upper back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A close view of a woman's upper back, with the tattoo centred between the shoulder blades and the neck. The tattoo is a diamond outline filled with bold, blocky capitals that spell out the words shine, on you crazy and diamond, with the letters angled to follow the facets. The ink is solid dark tone with no visible shading or colour, and the warm lighting gives the skin a reddish cast.

Mrs Abernathy's bakehouse stood at the bottom of Cutler's Lane, and its lamp was always the first lit in the village. Nell Pardoe came to her at fourteen with flour already in her hair from the sack she had carried up the hill, and for three winters she learned to knead before the cockerel and to read the dough by the feel of it under her palms.

The old woman had one rule about the ovens. You do not open the door before the window goes grey, because the heat falls out and the bread sulks. So they waited in the dark, listening to the bricks tick as they cooled and the river below turning over its stones. Nell asked once why the bakehouse had no candles. Mrs Abernathy said the dough did not need to see, only to be warm.
One morning in February the frost lay thick on the cobbles and the ovens had been fired since three. Nell was shaping diamond loaves, each cut across the top with four slanting strokes so the crust would split open like a stone turned to the light. Mrs Abernathy had never explained the pattern. She said only that the lane had gone dim the winter the mill burned, and her mother had baked the first one to bring it back.
Nell pressed the blade in and felt the dough give. Outside, the window turned from black to pewter, then to a thin clean gold, and the loaves came out of the heat with their facets flashing like wet slate. She carried the tray down the lane herself, and the village came to its doors to see what the bakery had made the morning brighter with.
