When Mrs Ferrier finally rowed across from Inchmurran with her cart, I had the cork out before she'd tied up. Don't scold me. The island has one bottle left from the south terrace, the vines you planted the year Ailsa was born, and I have decided it is for tonight.

I poured two glasses, filling each only to the line you always marked on the bowl with your thumbnail. You said a glass should never be full enough to tip over at a laugh. The wine sat dark and quiet in the lamplight, and I held mine up to the window the way you used to, to see the sea through it. The sea looked smaller that way, and easier to forgive.

The ferry timetable is pinned beside the stove where the damp can't reach it. Next crossing is Thursday, if the wind lets it. Mrs Ferrier says the mainland has a lawyer who wants to see me about the deeds, and a doctor who wants to see me about my chest, and neither of them knows the difference between a terrace and a field. I will go to both. I will take the second glass with me in my coat, wrapped in a tea towel, the way you carried eggs home from the market.

The line in the bowl has dropped a finger's width since I started writing. I'll leave your glass where it is, full to the mark, and drink to the boat.
